Virginia Beach, VA.: After winning the 2008 Gatorade AAA Challenge Cup at Hollydell, New Jersey this last weekend, the Washington All Stars 98 Squirt Major team sent their well-deserved and highly-coveted “Challenge Cup” on tour throughout the Eastern United States. The cup travelled down the Eastern shore to Virginia Beach, Virginia to the home of #88 Matty Hanchon for a few days of “fun in the sun”.
Upon it’s arrival in Virginia Beach, Matty grabbed the cup and raced into the house to wake up his mother, Melissa, which quickly turned the entire house into chaos.
Melissa’s reaction was one mixed with yelling, laughing, and dog barking. This was Matty’s first team championship win in a “AAA” level tournament, and there was definitely some more celebrating to do! Matty’s father, Chuck, a renowned expert at celebrating, broke out the required beverages, and a grand, late night party took place!!

The 2008 Gatorade AAA Challenge, with 6 teams entered from Washington, DC all the way up to Elmira, New York, seemed at first as if it would be a true “challenge” for the newly-formed Washington All Stars after losing to the Tom’s River Devils in the Semi-Finals of the Hockey Weekend Summer Sizzler held in Chesapeake, Virginia the previous weekend. The All Stars, however, spanked every team they faced in the preliminary round and racked up an impressive 45 goals in 6 games during the tourney, while giving up only 15.
It took quite a while, but the Hanchon’s were finally able to get Matty to bed. Stinking to high heaven, and not willing to take off his Gatorade Challenge championship t-shirt, Matty brought the cup to bed with him. Hopefully he only slept with it.
The next morning, after sleeping in a little late due to the festivities the night before, Matty was roped and bound like a calf and then thrown into the shower. His only condition was that the cup would go with him. The championship t-shirt was retired to the washing machine, as well.

Next, the cup travelled to Matty’s home ice rink, Chilled Ponds, in Chesapeake, Virginia, where he paraded the trophy around and took as many pictures as he could with his fans, teachers, coaches, and many, many girls who wanted his autograph.
Some of Matty’s biggest fans were onhand to enjoy the cup and get in on the action. Some of the Hampton Roads Junior Whalers even showed up to take pictures. Whalers Junior players Salky, Sully, and Miracle are pictured here.
Next, the cup will be on it’s way North to Mechanicsville, Virginia and the home of Hayden Keener, one of 2 standout goaltenders who helped the All starswin the prestigious Challenge Cup!!
